I’m giving some serious consideration to buying a late model Mustang GT coupe
, with a manual and preferably with the Performance Pack 1. Any year between 2015 and 2020 is OK (2018+ preferred)
but I’m trying to stay around the $30k mark, and most of the cars I’m seeing at dealers are asking $33k to $40k. Would it be a hopeless endeavor to make a $30K or $31k offer for say, a car listed at $34k?
Anyway, this would be a purely fun/vacation/
road trip car, I have a truck so no need for cargo capacity
. I also have a company car for work, so the Mustang
would probably only get ~500 miles a month on it. I rarely have more than one passenger and even more rarely have a third or fourth passenger for more than about a half hour drive, so the coupe is fine.
Anyway, does anyone have an S550 GT? Common problems to look out for? I love Kona Blue, Velocity Blue and especially Need for Green, but I understand that’s gonna be a hard to find color without buying brand new. There’s a local one listed that checks all my boxes besides color but they’re asking $38k when I think it’s more like a $34-35 k car:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
At least it has some miles already so they’re more likely to let me test drive it, even if I have little intention of purchasing that specific car unless they shave $5k off the top. Having not driven an S550 at all yet, I want to make sure I actually like it before sending serious inquiries to other dealers around the country for the best deal. A lot of the listing aggregate sites say this is a “Hot Car” to the effect that even at these higher prices, they are likely to sell in 7 days or less. Not sure I believe that, but I’m kinda tone-deaf as to the late model sports car market.
Maybe I should wait a few months to see if new
production ramps up again to meet demand, pushing used prices down a bit.

You probably will want to get an auto the 2018 refresh switched to the ten speed as well. Ford is getting sued over the manual transmission.

Please buy this gorgeous Mustang from John Bleakley (I mean, Lithia Springs). I got so excited, only to realize it’s a manual. That’s probably why it’s been there for a while.

I bought a brand new 2020 GT three weeks ago; PP1, 401A (digital dash), 6-speed, active exhaust, and the B&O stereo system. I’ve put 1500 miles on it so far, unfortunately it’s black however there were only 3-4 in the country with the package I wanted and, even then, they had to go to Michigan to get it for me.
Great driver’s car, the active exhaust makes me giggle in a good way, effortless power, easy to see out of, comfortable as hell, begs to be modded (500hp is easy), and, compared to go fast bits for my AMG, the price points of bolt-ons is comparatively cheap.
So far, so good; very livable if you need to daily... but don’t need to baby b/c the back seat is there to hold your back pack ;-)

There are A LOT of mustangs out there, you should be able to find the color options you want. My local ford dealer is a small one and they always have a bunch. I would agree that they probably sell quickly, still I think there are plenty to go around.
Funny you mentioned “let me test drive” as one Subaru dealer and one ford dealer has pulled that one me... GTFO with that. Subaru straight up would not let me drive an 08sti without a deposit even though I had scheduled a test drive over the phone and previously bought a brand new 05 wrx and a very slightly used 04 Sti from the same dealer!
One ford dealer said he thought he could “pull some strings” to get me a TD in a focus rs. I told him not to waist any string pulls on a focus. Then I went to my local dealer and the guy was like sure, the blue one or the black one? He did ask me if I would mind waiting because I was “just looking” and he was pretty sure he had a sale on lock (he did). So I waited then wheeled it around for a half hour.
Meanwhile you can just stroll in to any premium dealer and drive anything.
Good luck, hope to see a bright colored stang post in the near future.

You can offer that for sure, but I’d be willing to wager they’re not going to accept it. Margins in used cars are lower than most people expect because dealers have to advertise competitive prices to attract customers. Most used cars have at most $500-1000 in markup.
Not to mention this isn’t the best time to buy used. Auction prices are through the roof as supply is low and demand at an all time high (who would’ve thought with C19). We’ve been trading people out of leases early at work this past month because we need inventory and it’s cheaper than going to auction..crazy. Hope that helps. S550 are lovely machines and I always enjoy driving them. The exhaust note is intoxicating.

There are a few hot things re: warranty like the transmission lawsuit and engine tick on the 5.0. Not sure if they’re something to really worry about.
Overall the GT PP1 is definitely the place to be, incredibly good car in many ways. Make sure when shopping you avoid the ultra-base PP models, which somehow still come with the little 3-4" screen with a bunch of buttons; SYNC3 will be much more enjoyable.
Need for Green is a really good color, but the required stripes kinda ruin it for me personally.
I don’t remember if Magneride was an option or included in the PP, may want to give a drive in both to see what you prefer. I’ve heard many comments, both good/bad , on both, but Magneride might be the more comfortable option.
Good luck on the endeavor, hope to see another awesome colored Mustang around here.

This. All I’ve heard from journalists, is that the manual on the GT loses syncros like clockwork if driven spiritedly.
I’ve dri ven a 10 speed 2018 for about a month as a rental car, and loved it.
If you do need the manual, save money for upgrades to it.

Most of the manual cars I’ve owned over the years came with worn-out synchros that I’ve had no issue continuing to drive for years and hundreds of thousands of miles because rev matching , so I kinda doubt I ‘ ll encounter this issue. Thank you for the heads up though!

Glad to hear it’s doing well for you so far! I’m not too picky about options besides the stick, a non-monochrome color and PP1. In an ideal world I’d keep it bone stock, but we’ll see how long that lasts!
And yeah, I just have a girlfriend to tote around, no kids or plans for kids. I occasionally carry around a couple of friends but one of them is a super skinny 5'9"ish guy who will probably fit in the back without too much trouble.

The other option outside of a test drive is to rent one but I can’t seem to find anyone who has a late model Mustang GT for rent anywhere near me (Allentown PA).

Would you want to drive a new one? No way they won’t let ya. Paoli ford has a couple. Probably an hour from you.

I’d be happy to but I feel like asking for a new one to test drive is more imposing because I don’t want to put unnecessary miles on a car I almost certainly won’t actually buy. $30-35k I can swing, but 45-50k is beyond what I can comfortably afford.
At least with a one or two year old one that has some miles on it, I’m just putting a few more drops in a bucket that’s already got some water in it. I feel awkward putting the first real miles on a new
car I’m not gonna buy.

Gotcha, TD is part of the buying/sales process to me, for any new/newish car at least. I won’t burn a sales guys time over a car I’m not going to buy but I’m not even talking before I test drive. When I drove the focus RS, I came back in to hand off the keys, and said the drive didn’t offset boy racer looks. He agreed saying “these things were supposed to fly off the lots over sticker...” We swapped business cards and that was that .

Yeah, as long as you’re aware of the issue. Would investigate it thoroughly. Possible issue is that it’s a less than bulletproof design, which pair with less than great drivers (or abuse) , results in issues.

I am reminded of the Top Gear special where they took the C6 ZR1, Challenger, and CTS-V to the Bonneville salt flats and by the time Clarkson set his record in the ZR1, 2nd gear synchro was already burnt up. From
one day of hard use
.

I m 99.9% sure the Bullit comes with the different transmission from the Shelby gt350 and its better. Worth knowing its an option.
